Filmmaker Paloma Yañez Serrano presents her research "City Play: Exploring temporality and space in Cairo’s play dynamics" with the documentary film City Play undertaken for the MPhil in Ethnographic Documentary for the Granada Center of Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester
A project that in words of Doctor Christian Shur and Doctor Michelle Obeid is "based on a highly experimental and participatory research design in which Serrano provided cameras and camera instructions to two groups of children. The cameras were used by the children as a way of documenting and reflecting upon their play. In addition the cameras, the practice of filming, as well as Serrano’s research project were actively included by the children as part of and as platforms for their play. In this way Serrano allowed her project to be appropriated, transformed, and coloured by the forms of play she was studying. Some of the most fascinating parts of the thesis describe how Serrano herself was included and had her research project reformulated through the intervention of the children she was studying with."
The film has been nominated to participate in the student programme of the XXIV International Festival of Ethnological Film taking place in Belgrade (Serbia) in October 9th to 11th, 2015
